After the Thomas Fire ravaged the area, Montecito was beset by another tragedy: a horrible mudslide. The mudslide took the lives of 23 people and destroyed 130 homes. “The Missing” series, Ray’s first public artistic endeavor, is in remembrance of the lives lost in Montecito on January 9, 2018. After the mudslides, Ray began walking on the beach, trying to make sense of this tragedy. During his walks, he started seeing faces in the driftwood that had washed ashore. These moments of inspiration lead to a collection of meaningful pieces. For three years, Ray has crafted these sculptures, each with its own unique detail and spirit. “The Missing” was his first inspiration. Since then, Ray continues to use his many talents to create using organic materials, mostly found wood. His art tells a story, and his relatability and kindness continue to capture the attention of all who interact with him. Born in Albuquerque, NM, raised in Los Angeles, he has found Carpinteria, CA to be home and continues to create every day. We hope that his story will inspire you to create something of your own.
